PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. – After previously sailing this year out of Fort Lauderdale and Europe, Royal Caribbean says its fifth ship in its Oasis class will now call Port Canaveral home for at least the next two years. The delay likely related to bringing the ship to her official Florida homeport, Port Canaveral, as well as to ensuring travel restrictions have been lifted in order to host a stunning ceremony that could welcome all interested guests. Also on hand for the naming ceremony were a number of finalists for the #SearchForWonderMom contest. The event continued with a unique choral rendition of the United States national anthem, traditional religious blessings for the ship, crew, and everyone who will sail on her, and remarks from different cruise line executives. And now I understand what the maître d’ was saying to me on the first day of my cruise. He wasn’t saying “pendejo.” He was saying “Pinnacle.” The dining room was for Pinnacles only, all those older people rolling in like the tide on their motorized scooters.

The ship was built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France, and delivered to the cruise line on January 27, 2022. Icon of the Seas is the first in its class and is powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). Port Canaveral is already home to the second largest cruise ship, the Wonder of the Seas.

But the maître d’ politely refuses me entry in an English that seems to verge on another language. “I’m sorry, this is only for pendejos,” he seems to be saying. Meanwhile elderly passengers stream right past, powered by their limbs, walkers, and electric wheelchairs. “It is only pendejo dining today, sir.” “But I have a suite!

It’s one of the terminals closest to the city’s convention center coupled with a massive renovated parking garage and hotel. Port Canaveral has seven cruise terminals, making it the second-busiest cruise port in Florida. Located just north of the city of Cape Canaveral on Florida’s east coast, Port Canaveral is a highly popular cruise port because of its proximity to Orlando. Tomorrow, I will spend more time with him, but first the ship docks at St. Thomas, in the U.S. Charlotte Amalie, the capital, is more charming in name than in presence, but I still all but jump off the ship to score a juicy oxtail and plantains at the well-known Petite Pump Room, overlooking the harbor.
The 20-deck high ship comes in at 250,800 tons and will be more than six percent bigger than Wonder of the Seas and able to hold up to 7,600 passengers. Icon of the Seas will also be 10 feet longer than Wonder of the Seas. Today the ship docks at Royal Caribbean’s own Bahamian island, the Perfect Day at CocoCay. (This appears to be the actual name of the island.) A comedian at the nightclub opined on what his perfect day at CocoCay would look like—receiving oral sex while learning that his ex-wife had been killed in a car crash (big laughter). But the reality of the island is far less humorous than that. New cruise ship launches are always a big deal, but Icon represents more to the cruise industry.

It’s the second of six planned vessels in the new class, smaller than the last several ships for the line, coming in a 142,500 gross tons with a 3,100-passenger capacity based on double occupancy.
